Maggot Brain is the third studio album by the American funk band Funkadelic. It was recorded at United Sound Systems in Detroit during late 1970 and early 1971, before being released in July 1971 by Westbound Records. Shortly after Maggot Brain was recorded, Tawl Ross, Eddie Hazel, Billy Nelson, and Tiki Fulwood left the band for various reasons.

though the Mothership was well on its way already, Maggot Brain really helped it take off. The instrumental title track is the key reason to listen, specifically for Eddie Hazel's lengthy, mind-melting solo. George Clinton famously told Hazel to play "like your momma had just died," and the resulting evocation of melancholy and sorrow doesn't merely rival Jimi Hendrix's work, but arguably bests a lot of it. Accompanied by another softer guitar figure providing gentle rhythm for the piece, the end result is simply fantastic, an emotional apocalypse of sound.

Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time For y'all have knocked her up I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe I was not offended For I knew I had to rise above it all Or drown in my own shit. Come on Maggot Brain Go on Maggot Brain.

Do yourself a favour if you're thinking of getting a recent reissue and get an older re-issue with a SEW cat no (EG Maggot Brain rather than some modern mastered off a cd, coloured vinyl crap which will cost you twice as much.

The single greatest funk/psychedelic album of all time - its that simple

Bought this when I was 14. A perfect fusion of acid rock, funk ,and RnB. I was hooked. The problem is I could never find anything to come close to this. Not even from Funkadelic. Rip....Eddie Hazel

Ignore the 'review' by the dope from Audion. It's all great of course! He admits he only reviews it because it sounds like a bunch of white grebo prog loving hippies. Funkadelic is not normally his kind of thing. How narrow minded and square do you have to be to not love Funkadelic? Yeah you know!

Anybody have an original pressing with different matrix numbers than those listed here?

If it says RE then it should be a reissue people, trust the runouts more than the sleeves, which can often look the same. But looking at the Promo even it has RE1 so who knows. Something is surely wrong with the database on this.

I have a copy that I bought believing it was an original copy but it also has the runout you have WB-2007-A-RE-1 and WB-2007-B-RE1. Again the sleeve and labels look first press. Confused!

I have a copy with the runout etching showing WB-2007-A-RE1 and WB-2007-B-RE1 which I thought might be a reissue, but the labels and cover are definitely first press.
