Bohuslav Martinů (8 December 1890, Polička – 28 August 1959, Liestahl) was a Czech composer of modern classical music. He was very prolific, writing almost 400 pieces, among them 6 symphonies, choral works, operas, concertos, including for cello, violin, oboe and five for the piano and his chamber music, including seven string quartets. His artistic history content more creative periods, incl. postimpresionism, neo-classicism, expressionism etc. Biography: Bohuslav Martinů was born in a bell-tower where his father, a shoemaker by trade, was a watchman.

Bohuslav Martinu was born in what is now the Czech Republic when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a young man, he left home for France to seek his musical fortune, then left for America after the Nazis conquered France, and then returned to Europe after the Second World War. His music is a reflection not only of his genius, but of his international peregrinations. Still, there are things about Martinu's music that Czech performers, especially young Czech performers, seem to get in a way that non-Czechs don't.

Two of the Bohuslav Martinu piano trios recorded here were written in France, and two in the . where Martinu was, among other things, a teacher of Burt Bacharach). Yet there is something Czech about all of it, and this release by the Smetana Trio may be the recording of choice for the group. As a whole you might label the music neoclassic, but each work departs far enough from that label to make it meaningless.

A string trio is a group of three string instruments or a piece written for such a group. The term is generally used with reference to works of chamber music from the Classical period to the present. From at least the 19th century on, the term "string trio" with otherwise unspecified instrumentation normally refers to the combination violin, viola and cello (cf "string quartet", "piano trio" et. This is how the term is used by major catalogs, including IMSLP.
