The first name is, of course, a sly play on "Merlin" he made up on the spot, but other two names are derived from names used to refer to the wizard Merlin in the legend of King Arthur and stories that inspired the character.

The Kid Who Would Be King is a 2019 fantasy adventure film written and directed by Joe Cornish. The plot follows a young boy who finds King Arthur's legendary sword Excalibur, and must then use it to stop an ancient enchantress from destroying the world

Old school magic meets the modern world in the epic adventure THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING. Alex (Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he's just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Patrick Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson). The Kid Who Would Be King recalls classic all-ages adventures - and repurposes a timeless legend - for a thoroughly enjoyable new addition to the family movie canon.

He soon unites his friends and enemies, and they become knights who join forces with the legendary wizard Merlin. Together, they must save mankind from the wicked enchantress Morgana and her army of supernatural warriors. Now don't get me wrong, I still very much did not enjoy The Kid Who Would Be King, but the actual ending did turn me around on it somewhat. Hard to know for certain if this will play well for actual kids. But I don't know that a good message or a good time will be taken away from The Kid Who Would Be King by children, I doubt it, but it doesn't seem impossible.

First and foremost, "The Kid Who Would Be King" means an irrefutable improvement over shameful adaptations Hollywood has insisted on producing. 20th Century Fox's delightfully British new take is likely to be far from covering its production and advertising costs, but quality-wise, it does redeem and save Arthur from ending up, again, on a "worst of the year" list in the face of the failures/flops from studios like Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures.
