A spiral galaxy maintains its spirals arms due to density wave theory. Below is a list of notable spiral galaxies with their own articles. The classification column refers to the galaxy morphological classification used by astronomers to describe galaxy structure. Lists of astronomical objects.

Abstract: We have determined the fraction of barred galaxies in the H-band for a statistically well-defined sample of 186 spirals drawn from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy survey. We find 56% of our sample to be strongly barred at H, while another 16% is weakly barred. Only 27% of our sample is unbarred in the near-infrared. The RC3 and the Carnegie Atlas of Galaxies both classify only about 30% of our sample as strongly barred.

Most of the known spiral galaxies fall into this barred category – which are defined by the pronounced bar structure across their centres. The presence of this structure may be an indication of a galaxy’s age. Two-thirds of nearby, younger galaxies have the bar, while only a fifth of older, more distant spirals have it. An image of a "barred spiral" galaxy that could help us better understand our own Milky Way has been captured by Hubble space telescope.

A strange new kind of galactic beast has been spotted in the cosmic wilderness.
