Caroline Sallee makes music under the moniker Caroline Says, and on new album No Fool Like An Old Fool, she says a lot. The Huntsville, Alabama native, now based in Austin, has developed a mesmerizing aesthetic on her self-produced second LP, one that evokes multiple pleasing reference points even as she owns it completely. Her songs are graceful, swooning, amniotic entities - richly conceived compositions basking in texture and mood.

Using the alias Caroline Says, Caroline Sallee made her recording debut in 2014 with 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong, an entirely self-recorded album assembled in her parents' basement in Alabama. An intimate, hazy collection of folk-poppy reflection, it came to the attention of Western Vinyl, which reissued it in 2017 while she was working on the follow-up. Arriving a year later, No Fool Like an Old Fool was also written, performed, and recorded by Sallee alone in a basement, though this time in her own basement apartment in Austin, Texas. A more expansive, even dreamier set, No Fool Like an Old Fool curbs some of the brightest moments of her debut, inhabiting a warm breeze, daydreams, and lingering regret. There's still some jangle to be found on tracks like "Mea Culpa" and "Cool Jerk," though it's muted by wistful harmonies, humming background vocals, echo, and a resigned weariness.
Moving beyond the surf-folk foundations of her debut, on No Fool. Sallee loosens her earthly tether, allowing her songs to float to ever higher altitudes on clouds of loops, immaculate melodies, and hypnotic harmonies, as she sings about aging, the daily grind, and hometown stymie. Moving to Austin in 2013 gave her a new perspective on her hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, which informed the overall vibe of the album. I think leaving my fairly small hometown and then going back to visit it inspired the feeling I went for on this album. I observed that so many people I knew were content.
The first piece of good news about No Fool Like An Old Fool is that it’s a discernible improvement on Caroline Sallee’s last album 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong. That 2014 debut placed Sallee firmly in the crowded scene of Bandcamp-oriented bedroom indie pop upstarts, but she had enough of a way with a melancholy melody that she proved herself worth following. No Fool. sees Sallee doubling down on this quality with.
