The Bartered Bride (Czech: Prodaná nevěsta, The Sold Bride) is a comic opera in three acts by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana, to a libretto by Karel Sabina. The work is generally regarded as a major contribution towards the development of Czech music. Smetana's diary for December 1864 records that he was continuing to work on The Bartered Bride; the piano score was completed by October 1865. It was then put aside so that the composer could concentrate on his third opera Dalibor. Smetana evidently did not begin the orchestral scoring of The Bartered Bride until, following the successful performance of The Brandenburgers in January 1866, the management of the Provisional Theatre decided to stage the new opera during the following summer. Overture to The Bartered Bride. Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hamilton Harty, conductor, 1930.
Smetana: The Moldau; Overture and Dances from The Bartered Bride. Smetana: Ma Vlast (Complete Symphonic Cycle). Dvorak: Symphony No. 7 & Carnival Ov Erture - Smetana: The Moldau, Barte Red Bride And More. I bought Smetana: The Moldau as a record albumn back in the early 1970s. My sister took a classical music class at the University of Iowa and this was one of the albums they were required to listen to. I fell in love with it and and listened to it ever since.
Moldau is its German name and has come to be the preferred title for this piece, not least because Smetana himself was a German-speaking Czech. The Moldau was chronologically the second of the six works in Má Vlast. During its composition, the composer was plagued by severe headaches, symptoms of a condition that would cause him to go completely deaf in October 1874. Smetana had found his walks along the shores of the Moldau a source of compositional inspiration and thus decided to include a portrait of it in this series, which he began in 1872 with Vysehrad.
