The Soulful Moods of Gene Ammons is an album by saxophonist Gene Ammons recorded in 1962 and released on the Moodsville label. Ammons himself is typically excellent: few tenors in the '60s had his way with a ballad". Two Different Worlds" (Al Frisch, Sid Wayne) - 4:53.
A companion to Gene Ammons' other release on Moodsville, 1961's Nice 'n Cool, 1963's Soulful Moods of Gene Ammons picks a slightly less familiar batch of ballads (Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark," for example, or Jimmy Van Heusen's "But Beautiful") but performs them in the same soloist-plus-trio format, with pianist Patti Bown, bassist George Duvivier, and future. Tonight Show stalwart Ed Shaughnessy taking on accompanist duties
Blue Groove is an album by saxophonist Gene Ammons recorded in 1961 but not released on the Prestige label until 1982. Edwin Thomas Shaughnessy (January 29, 1929 – May 24, 2013) was a swing music and jazz drummer best known for his long association with Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. She released an album under her own name, Patti Bown Plays Big Piano, in 1958 for Columbia Records. The next year she was invited by Quincy Jones to join an orchestra for the European tour of the musical Free and Easy. While there she also played with Bill Coleman in Paris. In the 1960s she worked extensively in the studios, recording with Gene Ammons, Oliver Nelson, Cal Massey, Duke Ellington, Roland Kirk, George Russell, and Harry Sweets Edison.

One of the best efforts from Ammons' extensive catalog. A fat, warm, rich sax tone - you know, the one you immediately identify as Jug - is on display in all its glory on this great Moodsville release. Feeling tired and stressed out? Give Uncle Gene a spin
