Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Artistfacts. 1) Neil Young was staying in a cabin in the woods with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, writing songs. Crosby got a copy of Life magazine, and showed Neil Young the pictures of Kent State, including the famous picture of the woman kneeling down, crying over a dead body. Young, without saying a word, left the cabin carrying only that magazine and his guitar. He returned a few hours later and played, with tears in his eyes, Ohio.

The trio's first album, Crosby, Stills & Nash, was released in May 1969 and was a major hit, spawning two Top 40 hit singles and receiving significant airplay on FM radio. With the exception of drummer Dallas Taylor, Stills had handled most of the instrumental parts himself, which left the band in need of additional personnel to be able to tour, a necessity given the debut album's commercial impact.

Ohio is a 1970 protest song composed by Neil Young in reaction to the Kent State shootings, and performed by the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young quartet. The incident took place on May 4, 1970 and became a sociopolitical symbolization during the Vietnam War. The sequence of events led to a nationwide anti-establishment student strike, forcing hundreds of colleges and universities to close.

Written as a reaction to the assassination of Bobby Kennedy in 1968, this moody David Crosby song on Crosby, Stills & Nash’s debut album was a warning of darker days ahead. The chorus refrain, ‘It appears to be a long time before the dawn’, echoes the foreboding atmosphere. With the tragedies at Altamont and Kent State ahead, it was not too far off the mark.

Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) was a vocal folk rock supergroup made up of American singer-songwriters David Crosby and Stephen Stills and English singer-songwriter Graham Nash. They were also known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, who was an occasional fourth member. They were noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on American music and culture.
