The Orchestral Tubular Bells is an orchestral version of Mike Oldfield's album Tubular Bells, arranged by David Bedford and recorded in 1974 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring Oldfield himself playing the guitar. Excerpts from the album were featured in the 1979 NASA film, The Space Movie. It peaked at on the UK Albums Chart in 1975. In 2000 it was reissued by Virgin as a HDCD and is the only one of Mike's 1970s albums yet to be reissued by Mercury Records.

The Orchestral Tubular Bells was performed and recorded live at the Barking Town Hall in September 1974 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This was shown on a British television station, BBC Two, with Steve Hillage (of Gong) playing guitar The Orchestral Tubular Bells was not the only Mike Oldfield album that was orchestrated at the time, David Bedford also wrote the score for Oldfield's second album, Hergest Ridge

The Orchestral Tubular Bells is a music studio album recording by MIKE OLDFIELD (Crossover Prog/Progressive Rock) released in 1975 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. And second but not least, some sections of the album are just out of tone, like the orchestra was bad conducted or arranged (sorry Mr. Bedford) or if they had not enough time to rehearse properly. Specially during the second act the playing is just a mess, right under the work that Oldfield originally did.

a guitar solo, or tubas replacing bass in a key section, it's all done smoothly and professionally by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The only problem with the album is that it all sounds a little too conventional as orchestral music and betrays some of Oldfield's original source material and inspirations (or, perhaps, some of Bedford's influences) - so one hears in sharp relief the influence of Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, and even Jerome Moross (whose music from The Big Country - also an inspiration to Yes.
