Swan Lake, Op. 20, is a ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets. The scenario, initially in two acts, was fashioned from Russian and German folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger (Václav Reisinger)

Works on This Recording. Tchaikovsky's three sumptuous ballet scores are also three of his supreme masterpieces, as remarkable for their emotional content as for the beauty of their melodies and orchestration. André Previn, who has described himself as a complete romantic, became Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1968.

André Previn 's superb recordings of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky 's Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker have been admired since they first appeared on vinyl in the mid-'70s, and this EMI Classics twofer presents highlights of these famous performances with the London Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky 's dance music is conveyed with dynamic energy, rich sonorities, elegant expression, and ecstatic climaxes, so the true brilliance of the scores is readily apparent
