BRUCH: Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 Recorded 5 and 17 June 1928 in New York City Matrix no. W 98550-1 & 98551-3 First issued on Columbia 50073-D. With the exception of Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, the remaining items on the disc fall into the category of short salon and encore-type pieces, all of which Salmond favors with his radiant, rotund tone. He’s placed forward and spotlighted, so that Simeon Rumschisky’s piano sometimes seems banished to a faraway place, but Rumschisky is no shrinking violet.

The Hungarian cellist Tibor de Machula (1912-82) spent the second half of his life in Amsterdam where he was the distinguished principal of the Concertgebouw orchestra. To finish we have a dignified, expressive Bruch Kol Nidrei and a touching but unsentimental Träumerei in de Machula’s own arrangement for cello and orchestra. The restorations are unproblematic with no ticks or pops; no notes either. This set encapsulates de Machula’s art very sympathetically.

Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 (also known as All Vows, the meaning of the phrase in Aramaic), is a composition for cello and orchestra written by Max Bruch. Bruch completed the composition in Liverpool, England, in 1880:100 and published it in Berlin in 1881. It was dedicated to and premiered by Robert Hausmann, who later co-premiered Johannes Brahms's Double Concerto with Joseph Joachim, the dedicatee of Bruch's most famous work, the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor.
