The Barghest o’ Whitby Lyrics. I doubt I shall ever come back Moving thin and wane, an old danger A thorn am I with sunken back I am the enemy of you, traitor And the world cold. I'm still on track Your heart so cruel - mine is greater. And I thought: Well, we live in Yorkshire and we never really looked at our own heritage before in My Dying Bride lyrics. Let us look at this and see if we could invent our own story, our own Yorkshire folklore. And so I wrote a story called ‘The Barghest O’Whitby’ about a large black dog which, at first, it seems to crawl the moor land randomly killing people, but it does not. The lyrics tell a story of why this dog is doing what it is doing and its final victim is waiting up in the old sea town, the old fishing town of Whitby

First off, 'The Barghest o' Whitby' is the longest song the band have put to tape, doing the rounds for 27 minutes in total, even if a good two or three minutes are atmospheric noises of a brooding storm and equally stormy squalls of feedback as Andrew Craighan and Hamish Glencross transition into the second section. And if you're going to listen to 'The Barghest o' Whitby' for just one reason, it's got to be the climax of the piece. Bride fan or not, there isn't much more potent than listening to a mildly intriguing opening section that includes some worthwhile riffing, then being lulled back into the typical slumber of gothic doom's soft cocoon, only to awake in the middle of the night with cymbal and tom fills being hurled all around the sky like thunder, Stainthorpe working up to.

I purchased the album on vinyl LP, with the piece split over two sides. There is no obtrusive cut, as the first side ends just after the mellow section in the middle of the track briefly fades out. The front cover features a stunning painting of the title beast by Aaron, with the vinyl format especially showing off the haunting and moody artwork. The inner sleeve contains the lyrics laid out like a beautiful gothic poem
