Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for The Family and the song was featured on their eponymous album The Family. It was later made famous by Irish recording artist Sinéad O'Connor, whose arrangement was released as the second single from her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. This version, which O'Connor co-produced with Nellee Hooper, became a worldwide hit in 1990.

About Nothing Compares 2 U. Originally written and composed by Prince for one of his side projects, The Family. It was later made famous by Irish recording artist Sinéad O'Connor, whose arrangement was released as the second single from her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. A music video, which has been described as iconic, was shot and received heavy rotation on MTV. Its lyrics explore feelings of longing from an abandoned lover’s point of view

O'Connor released her first album three years earlier. It got a lot of play on college radio, earning her a small, but devoted fan base. This song thrust her into the spotlight, and the attention had some deleterious effects on the singer. Nothing Compares 2 U" earned her a Grammy for Best Alternative Performance, but she refused to appear on the awards show in protest of materialism in the music industry. Director John Maybury shot a lot of footage around Paris for the video, but ended up using just a simple tight shot of O'Connor singing. It was the first time most people saw what she looked like and were surprised that she was bald. Sinéad O'Connor announced in March 2015 that she will not be performing this song anymore. The Irish songstress explained: "The first principle of the manner in which I'm trained as a singer (Bel Canto) is we never sing a song we don't emotionally identify with.

In 1990, Sinead O’Connor was at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with Nothing Compares 2 U. Her version of the Prince-penned song was also a No. 1 hit in 18 other countries. A month later the Irish singer’s second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, was in pole position on the UK charts as well as 13 other countries including six weeks at No. 1 in the US - going on to become the third best-selling single of 1990. For a moment there, Sinead could do no wrong
