City Lights - Classic Performances by Lou Reed is a compilation album by Lou Reed. Coney Island Baby" (live). Satellite Of Love" (live). Gimmie Some Good Times". Tracks 1 - 3 from the Live LP Take No Prisoners. Tracks 4 & 5 from the LP Rock And Roll Heart. Track 6 from the LP Street Hassle. Tracks 7 & 8 from the LP The Bells. Track 9 from the LP Growing Up In Public.

This awkward if well-meaning collection chases Lou Reed through the four albums he made for Arista between 1976-1980, and does its level best to convince the listener that any moment now, there's some long-forgotten classic coming round the bend. Of course there isn't - of those four albums, only 1978's Street Hassle truly stands as vintage Reed and, if you already own the earlier Rock and Roll Diary anthology, with its vote-winning grasp of eight Velvet Underground classics, there's very little here to interest you further. If you must hear late-'70s Lou, go for the Take No Prisoners live album. It says more for both his mood and his mindset than any number of these so-called "classic performances.

Lou Reed comprises eight new recordings of then-unreleased Velvet Underground songs, plus two new songs, "Going Down" and "Berlin" (the latter was re-recorded by Reed as the title track for his 1973 album Berlin). With increasing interest in the Velvet Underground, Reed's debut album was highly anticipated, but the result was a commercial and relative critical disappointment, peaking at only No. 189 on the Billboard 200.
