Folk music may be the current music of iPod choice for the bearded masses, however, as with all great music styles, there was much that went before the current sounds associated with it. Mark Pritchard – the man behind Harmonic 33, Troubleman, and member of Global Communication along with Tom Middleton – has taken the time to pull together some of the better known examples from a time when folk was getting loved up and experimenting with rock, jazz and funk.
Psychedelic folk (sometimes acid folk or freak folk) is a loosely defined form of psychedelia that originated in the 1960s. It retains the largely acoustic instrumentation of folk, but adds musical elements common to psychedelic music. Psychedelic folk generally favors acoustic instrumentation although it often incorporates other instrumentation. Chanting, early music and various non-Western folk music influences are often found in psych folk.
Warp producer Mark Pritchard and visual artist Jonathan Zawada explain how their collaboration produced the mysterious worlds of new album Under The Su. Intended for release in 2014, the album took on a life of its own as Pritchard, who by his own admission has never been a fast worker, struggled with the creative process. About half of the album’s songs were first written in the late 2000s, while some, such as ‘EMS’ and ‘The Blinds Cage’, are even older.

With a career spanning multiple decades, genres, labels, and an almost incalculable number of collaborations, Mark Pritchard has built up an extensive list o. He's already released the Ghosts EP this summer; it's the first of three EPs he's doing for Warp. The second, Lock Off, will drop in September. I always wanted to do music that was interesting to me, and while there might be a few tracks with a similar vibe, I wanted to move things forward into different areas.
When Mark Pritchard first released "?," that question mark made perfect sense. It was 2009, and the track-six somber minutes of gelatinous, pitch-black drones and a doleful, harpsichord-like synth melody-didn't sound like anything else he had ever done. There are nods to Boards of Canada, particularly in the vocoded recitation of colors in "Hi Red," the shortest of a number of sketch-like, interstitial cuts. The only question was how music so simple, and almost naïve, had done such a thorough job of erasing the traces of the modern world around me. Back to home.
We’ve literally dedicated our lives to each other: We’re musical soulmates, and it just so happens that Michael is my soulmate in life, too. We’re very sensitive to one another; there’s no-one I’m more honest with than him, and that feeds into the music we make. In Iwrestledabearonce, we were the ‘replacement people’ for original members, and being that eventually wears you down. We want to connect with people on a base level and have them feel something when they hear our music. In terms of connection, anyone who’s experienced mental illness will likely relate to LaPlante’s lyrics across Spiritbox’s recent Singles Collection released via Pale Chord. A five-song set released throughout the first half of 2019, the tracks find their creator laying bare some of her darkest moments.
