His 1979 album Prince went platinum, and his next three albums-Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)-continued his success, showcasing his prominently explicit lyrics and blending of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as The Revolution and released Purple Rain, the soundtrack album to his film debut. Prince was set to release the album with a monochromatic black cover with only the catalog number printed, but after 500,000 copies had been pressed, Prince had a spiritual epiphany that the album was evil and had it recalled. It was later released by Warner Bros.

Prince interview as posted in the October 1998 issue of Guitar World. Representatives of the Artist arrange for a meeting - a secret rendezvous - between myself and the gifted one at The Hit Factory in New York City. Since the album was a success, it leads me to believe that the whole interactive thing offers great possibilities.

For ’86, my producer Drew and I really went back to the basics. I also grew up listening to Prince, Genesis, Cyndi, Peter Gabriel, and Phil Collins, which you hear a lot of in ’86. Their sound resonated in my life and my childhood, so, it’s really in a sense the beginning of my story. And that’s exactly what ’86 and Goldenheart is for me. A new beginning. 86 is actually a slang term-it means to get rid of something. For me, I’ve put up so many walls that I forgot if I was going to do this, that I can’t play the victim, I have to play the survivor. The song’s about ridding yourself of all those barriers so that you can be free and fight for love. That’s what everything I do now is about. By the time this album comes out, I think people will hear we’re totally different. I’ll let the music speak for itself.

Prince leads the way to the studio, where a handsome, soft-spoken producer and engineer named Joshua Welton is waiting, ready to cue up tracks from HITNRUN, which is scheduled to be released on Jay Z’s Tidal streaming service on Sept. 7. The sound in this sleek wood-paneled space is pristine, and a reporter’s objectivity may be compromised by listening to music created by an international pop icon while that icon sits three feet away, tapping out the bass lines with his fingertips, but the songs sound great: supple and sexy and full of ear-walloping rococo flourishes.
