Johannes Brahms in Pörtschach. Prizewinners concert in Tokyo. Thursday May 30th, 2019Thursday May 30th, 2019 Johannes Brahms Gesellschaft. On June 9th, Luca Giovannini, prizewinner of the 25th International Johannes Brahms Competition is invited to play the Dvorak cello concert in Tokyo, Suntory Hall under the baton of Yuki Miyagi and the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra.

The International Johannes Brahms Competition ("Brahms Competition") is an international competition for the performers of piano, violin, viola, cello, chamber music, and singers. The competition has taken place annually since 1993. The event is held in Pörtschach am Wörthersee, Austria, where Johannes Brahms occasionally stayed during the summer. In each category, competitors are obliged to perform works composed by Brahms, either in the preliminary or final round.

The Double Concerto in A minor, Op. 102, by Johannes Brahms is a concerto for violin, cello and orchestra. The orchestra consists of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings. The Double Concerto was Brahms' final work for orchestra. It was composed in the summer of 1887, and first performed on 18 October of that year in the Gürzenich in Cologne, Germany.

Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. The historical town hall and the timber-framed city center give the festival its unique setting. At the same time dedicated inhabitants, who act as individual choir assistants, ensure a familiar atmosphere.
