The Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer entitled the work "The Passionate Symphony", employing a Russian word, Патетическая (Pateticheskaya), meaning "passionate" or "emotional", that was then (mis-)translated into French as pathétique, meaning "solemn" or "emotive".

Tchaikovsky ‎– The Pathétique - Sixth Symphony. Probably one of the worst performances of Tchaikovsky's 6th that I've ever heard. The mixing was terrible and you can clearly hear when microphones are turned on and off. Instruments move around in the middle of any given movement, suddenly the strings go from being on the right channel to being exclusively on the left channel.

Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathétique," is one of the greatest hits of classical music, and recordings of this extremely popular work are ubiquitous, though there's little variance among them to justify the large number of releases and reissues. Yet once in a while, a version appears that shakes up conventional notions about this symphony, and makes it sound fresh and revitalized.

This performance of Tchaikovsky’s great valedictory symphony has colossal impact thanks to the wonderfully vivid and engaging sound. But there’s robust emotional power in Currentzis’ interpretation, too, and MusicAeterna play with terrific attention to detail and a coiled intensity-the music surges and seethes, building up in great waves of sound. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 Teodor Currentzis.

Tchaikovsky's greatest symphony and, possibly, his greatest work. The 'Pathétique' is one of the defining sounds of the romantic period, but the story behind it is just as intriguing. Was it due to cholera-infected water? Could it have been suicide? Or was it, quite simply, the result of a broken heart? All sorts of theories, both credible and anything but, have been espoused when it comes to the reason for Tchaikovsky’s death in November 1893. Tchaikovsky was more than satisfied with this four-movement symphony – but, as was so often and so cruelly the case, the critical reception it received was decidedly muted. Described by some as his farewell to life, in reality we shall never know exactly what inspired the work. What we can be sure of, though, is that it lives on as one of the composer’s most adored creations.

Tchaikovsky symphony no 6 pathetique.

Following an unsuccessful attempt at a sixth symphony in the autumn of 1892, Tchaikovsky made a fresh start the following February and within a matter of days had outlined some of the music. He told his nephew Vladimir ('Bob') Davidov that it was to be a programmatic symphony and one that would remain an enigma to all. "Let them guess!" he wrote. The symphony was written in a small house in Klin, 50 miles northwest of Moscow, and completed by the end of August 1893
