The final stage of the beatification process for Pope John Paul II has been approved as a date for the honour has been set for May 1. Pope Benedict XVI said in a decree today that a French nun's recovery from Parkinson's disease was a miracle - the last step needed for beatification. Fast tracked: Pope Benedict XVI began the process of beatification for John Paul just weeks after he died in 2005. Last year, there were doubts over whether her original diagnosis was correct, but 'scrupulous' analysis of the case has determined her cure had no scientific explanation. Born in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920, Karol Wojtyla was the youngest pope in 125 years and the first non-Italian in 455 years when he was elected pope in 1978.

The Polish American Cultural Center places a figure of Americans who have some Polish ancestry at 19-20 million . Historian John Bukowczyk noted that Polish immigrants in America were highly mobile, and 40 to 60 percent were likely to move from any given urban neighborhood within 10 years. The reasons for this are very individualistic; Bukowczyk's theory is that many immigrants with agricultural backgrounds were eager to migrate because they were finally freed from local plots of land as they.
The second wave of immigration was inaugurated in 1854 when about 800 Polish Catholics from Silesia founded Panna Maria, a farming colony in Texas. This symbolic opening of America to the Poles also opened the flood gates of immigration. However, during the years of partition, Polish Americans kept alive the belief in a free Poland. Such cohesiveness was further heightened in the Polish American community during the Cold War, when Poland was a satellite of the Soviet Union. But since the fall of the Soviet empire and with free elections in Poland, this outer threat to the homeland is no longer a factor in keeping Polish Americans together.
