Richard Strauss in 1888. Death and Transfiguration (Tod und Verklärung), Op. 24, is a tone poem for large orchestra by Richard Strauss. Strauss began composition in the late summer of 1888 and completed the work on 18 November 1889. The work is dedicated to the composer's friend Friedrich Rosch. The music depicts the death of an artist. Strauss conducted the premiere on 21 June 1890 at the Eisenach Festival (on the same programme as the premiere of his Burleske in D minor for piano and orchestra). He also conducted this work for his first appearance in the United Kingdom, at the Wagner Concert with the Philharmonic Society on 15 June 1897 at the Queen's Hall in London. Death and Transfiguration (1889). Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks (1895). Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1896). Ein Heldenleben (1898).

The 2012 tour focused on a week-long residency at the Vienna Musikverein. In August and September 2013, concerts took place in Grafenegg, Berlin, Bucharest, Paris, Du?sseldorf, Frankfurt, Lucerne and Bonn. Death and Transfiguration’s halting opening is beautifully done – the wind chords impeccably tuned and the stuttering timpani rhythms just loud enough to be heard. Strauss’s debt to Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet is clear in the faster music, but the rather protracted final section couldn’t have been composed by anyone else.
