Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos, Paganini Rhapsody. Earl Wild Plays Rachmaninoff. This compilation is a must-have by several reasons. Horenstein always a very demanding conductor to play with soloists. Just remember his choice was Ivry Gitlis in Bruch, and Sibelius during the middle fifties. In 1965, there were many brilliant pianists around the world. Earl Wild was the chosen one. His impressive musicality and steeled fingers made him a fabulous choice to play Rachmaninov. The Third Piano Concerto is probably the jewel of the crown (despite I miss the devilish cadenza of the First Movement). The Second goes to Richter during the middle fifties and William Kapell.

Allegro vivace (8:44) 07. 43 (20:40). Jascha Horenstein's incisive, colorful support is a major asset, and the Royal Philharmonic plays beautifully for him. If you don't mind the Third Concerto cuts (or already have Martha Argerich's landmark third), these classic performances only get better with age, and the sonics are still terrific. and he held these recordings (the finest versions of this music still) close. Wild took liberties with his playing but it was never a distraction. I remember when these first appeared on a budget LP series for about 2 bucks each. Waited ages for them to show up on CD. Now it appears they are in all new packaging. Earl Wild at the keyboard was a marvelous thing. 04-15-2014, 04:00 PM #15.
