The music on this release comes from a pair of LPs recorded in 1960 and 1967 by conductor George Szell and the ensemble he honed to magnificence, the Cleveland Orchestra.

Successors Erich Leinsdorf, George Szell, and Lorin Maazel all recorded for Columbia, with some early Szell records being assigned to Columbia's budget sub-label, Epic. Szell's recordings with Cleveland in particular have remained steadily in print. In the 1990s the Columbia catalogue was acquired by Sony Classics, which continues to issue the recordings. The Cleveland Orchestra was one of the first to find new audiences via digital recording technology thanks to its collaboration with the locally-based audiophile label Telarc. George Szell was music director of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1946-1970, nearly a quarter century. The 8th Symphony was recorded in 1959 and the 9th Symphony in 1959, so we get to hear both the Orchestra and the conductor in top form.
