Tony Russell "Charles" Brown (September 13, 1922 – January 21, 1999) was an American blues singer and pianist whose soft-toned, slow-paced blues-club style influenced blues performance in the 1940s and 1950s. He had several hit recordings, including "Driftin' Blues" and "Merry Christmas Baby". Brown was born in Texas City, Texas. As a child he loved music and received classical music training on the piano.

Brown began his career as a singer and pianist in Johnny Moore's Three Blazers in the mid-1940s and continued to make countless records, his last album for Verve being released in 1998. I saw Charles Brown perform at Nightstage in Cambridge, Massachusetts and this 2 CD set captures the feel of Mr Brown's great voice and piano playing. 2 people found this helpful. For those not familiar with Charles Brown, he was a pianist/vocalist who was well known in jazz and R&B circles during the late 1940s through the 1950s. He had a number of chart hits but is probably best known for his recordings of Drifting Blues and Merry Christmas Baby. Brown's style was definately based in the blues but he tended to have a more relaxed, laid back delivery (hence the "Cool Blues" of this CDs title) that often gets labelled as jazz rather than blues.
