Journeyman is the eleventh solo studio album by Eric Clapton. Heralded as a return to form for Clapton, who had struggled with alcohol addiction and had recently found sobriety, the album has a 1980s electronic sound, but it also includes blues songs like "Before You Accuse Me", "Running on Faith", and "Hard Times. Bad Love" was released as a single, reaching the No. 1 position on the Album Rock Chart, and being awarded a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 1990
Although Journeyman still suffers from an overly slick production, Clapton sounds more convincing than he has since the early '70s. Not only is his guitar playing muscular and forceful, his singing is soulful and gritty. Furthermore, the songwriting is consistently strong, alternating between fine mainstream rock originals ("Pretending") and covers ("Before You Accuse Me," "Hound Dog")

Titled Journeyman and released in November 1989, Clapton's 11th studio LP didn't fully deviate from the radio-friendly approach he'd taken for Behind the Sun and August, but it was a clear step back from the adult-contemporary abyss. That change was apparent from "Pretending," an album-opening, Williams-penned mid-tempo number with just enough middle-aged swagger and stinging Slowhand guitar to raise fans' flagging hopes for a record with a little more bite. On the whole, those hopes were rewarded.

Journeyman saw Clapton closing out the ‘80s with one of his biggest-sounding albums yet, surrounding his fiery guitar playing with rich, dynamic production reminiscent of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. Opener "Pretending" swirls with horns, piano, and gritty vocals, but they all fall away when he goes for a sharp, distorted solo. The drums on "Run So Far"-a collaboration with George Harrison-come loaded with reverb and make a perfect vehicle for the tune's light, twangy melody. Journeyman Eric Clapton.
