Anathallo's "A Holiday at the Sea" EP seems like one of the stronger mini-albums to emerge from the Indie Rock world since its 2003 release. The music is very lush and blissful, yet equally bombastic; most noticeable is the dramatic, mathematical drumming; the lengthy, but interesting songwriting (that never seems to repeat itself), and some diverse passages of American Football-inspired guitars, with a little gain for an added punch; plenty of instrumentation that makes it hard to describe, but I believe it's music that was created to send your thoughts into a less troubling place. With the addition of horns, keys, stomp-inspired percussion, and emotional vocal/lyrical performances (there are a lot of people in this band), the 3 tracks and 17 minutes of music on this EP from this Mt. Pleasant, Michigan band, will forever remain one of the region's best kept secrets. Most of this band's music is worthwhile, but hard to find. Here's to hoping they someday get back together and make their music more easily accessible. For fans of: Yes, American Football, Unwed Sailor, Sufjan Stevens
