Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (IPA: ˈgøːtə (Goethe Society pronunciation)), born Johann Wolfgang Goethe (28 August 1749–22 March 1832) was a German polymath: he was a painter, novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist, philosopher, and for ten years chief minister of state at Weimar. The most important of Goethe’s works produced before he went to Weimar was his tragedy Götz von Berlichingen (1773), which was the first work to bring him fame, and the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), which gained him enormous popularity as a writer in the Sturm und Drang movement. During the years at Weimar before he met Schiller he began Wilhelm Meister, wrote the dramas Iphigenie auf Tauris-meaning Iphigenia in Tauris, Egmont, Torquato Tasso, and Reineke Fuchs.

The tragedy was the first major work of the Sturm und Drang movement. Intending the play as a drama to be read rather than performed, Goethe published it as a shortened version of his drama Urgötz oder Die Geschichte Gottfriedens von Berlichingen mit der eisernen Hand dramatisiert (1771; The Dramatized Story of Gottfried von Berlichingen with the Iron Hand ).

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born on August 28, 1749 in Frankfurt . Main and died March 22,1832 in Weimar. He was a poet, playwright, and novelist. His first drama Götz von Berlichingen was published in 1773 and his novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers) in 1774. The epistolary novel describes how a young man called Werther loses his heart to Lotte, who has already decided to marry another man, and ends tragically with the protagonist’s suicide. These two works, particularly the last, made him very renowed in Europe. In September 1775, Goethe was invited to Weimar by duke Karl August, where he was to spend the rest of his life, apart from his travels.

Götz von Berlichingen is a successful 1773 drama by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, based on the memoirs of the historical adventurer-poet Gottfried or Götz von Berlichingen (c. 1480–1562) Goethe's plot treats events freely: while the historical Götz died an octogenarian, Goethe's hero is a free spirit, a maverick, intended to be a pillar of national integrity against a deceitful and over-refined society, and the way in which he tragically succumbs to the abstract.
