The Black Rider is an album by Tom Waits, released in 1993 on Island Records, featuring studio versions of songs Waits wrote for the play The Black Rider, directed by Robert Wilson and co-written by William S. Burroughs. The play is based on the German folktale Der Freischütz, which had previously been made into an opera by Carl Maria von Weber. The play premiered on March 31, 1990, at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Germany.

Vocals: Tom T. Hall, Words and Music: Tom T. Hall, Original Album: New Train, Same Rider (RCA - 1977). Lyrics: There is a force that moves our lives from place to place There is a force exchanging smiles from face to face If we must go and we must go then we will be apart May the force be with you always sweetheart. The force is bigger than the little plans we made The force picks winners. Hall is known as a storyteller, a songwriter with a keen eye for detail and a knack for narrative. Many musicians have covered his songs - most notably Jeannie C. Riley's 1968 hit "Harper Valley . and he also has racked up a number of solo hits, including seven number one singles. Hall is the son of a bricklaying minister, who gave his child a guitar at the age of eight. He had already begun to write poetry, so it was a natural progression for him to begin writing songs. Hall began learning music and performing techniques from a local musician, Clayton Delaney.
