Christer enjoys sports, sailing, skiing, reading and playing Frisbee and games. He became the first Swedish astronaut to fly in space. During his Celsius mission, Christer conducted three spacewalks. His tasks were to attach new hardware to the Station and to reconfigure the Station’s electrical power system.

He was launched aboard the STS-116 Shuttle mission on December 10, 2006, at 01:47 GMT, making him the first Swedish citizen in space. Married with three children, he is a Fellow at CERN and taught mathematics at the Royal Institute of Technology before being selected to join the Astronaut Corps of the European Space Agency in 1992
