The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, is a work for piano and orchestra completed by Johannes Brahms in 1858. The composer gave the work's public debut in Hanover, the following year. It was his first-performed orchestral work, and (in its third performance) his first orchestral work performed to audience approval. This concerto is written in the traditional three movements and is approximately 40 to 50 minutes long.

Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms was one of my very first LP's almost 55 years ago. I continue to feel something very deep inside every time that ominous and seemingly relentless pulse begins the 1st movement. Those few measures always seem to predict the quality of the ensuing performance. In the present RCA boxed set of Brahms symphonies with James Levine conducting the Chicago Symphony, that initial pulse belabors no points. That characterizes the approach that Levine takes throughout the cycle. There is no artificial sentimentality or excessive emotionality. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra have never played with greater distinction throughout the set. I always wonder how much of Levine's control pertains to his opera experience at the Met. Every work here is played so perfectly and with emotion sans syrup.

Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 15, went through several stages before it was completed in 1858. He envisioned the work as a sonata for two pianos, then as a symphony, before settling on the piano concerto structure. The final realization reflects this. The work, by some of its first hearers, seemed un-concertolike, with the piano and orchestra knit closely together instead of allowing the piano the opportunity for pure solo display. As time passed by, this intricate structure came to be seen as one of the work's glories.
