Skinhead Reggae 1969. The "Mod" era had died down and people were looking to the next "thing",which was labeled skinhead music because of their short haircuts and appearance. But no matter why or when, this is great music. It's not a "greatest hits" type of set,but taken as a whole the music forms its own identity  . This album makes me wanna get up and move my feet! Nice little sampler of old skool reggae, with a little bit about its history on the insert.

Skinhead Reggae (or early reggae), is generally considered to be the period before the Rastafari movement entered mainstream Jamaican music from 1968 to 1970. It can be distinguished from rocksteady by the slightly faster beat marked out by the drummer using the hi-hat, heavy organ lines, lower mixing of the bass, and electronically doubled rhythm guitar stroke. It met great success in the UK, especially with the skinhead subculture.

There are several subgenres of reggae music including various predecessors to the form. As a testament to its far reaching impact in other markets, this era and sound of reggae is sometimes referred to in retrospect as "skinhead reggae" because of its popularity among the working class skinhead subculture in the UK during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The roots sound can be best identified in the Jamaican recordings of the late 1970s by artists such as Burning Spear, Max Romeo, The Abyssinians, Culture and Israel Vibration. The term "rockers" refers to a particular sound of roots reggae, pioneered in the mid-1970s by Sly & Robbie, and very popular in the late seventies. Rockers is best described as a somewhat more mechanical and aggressive style of playing reggae with a greater use of syncopated drum patterns.

Notes

Mastered at The Town House.

Dawning of a New Era pulls together for the first time two CD's worth of prime records from 1968-69, a period when Skinheads were still largely an underground youth movement and not a violent newspaper headline.
