Before he became Heavy Metal's legendary frontman, Ronnie Dio trained his craft as the lead of the Red Caps and later The Prophets, two early garage/doo wop styled rock bands. This release collects the rarest and the best of Dio's output from those early years, featuring 28 tracks, 4 previously unreleased. Hear where one of the most recognizable voices in rock n' roll history began.

Before Ronnie James Dio came to prominence in Rainbow, he had already paid his dues – in spades. But as a bequiffed crooner in the 1950s he had yet to find his niche. We tried everything with Ronnie, recalls Jim Pantas, who managed Dio from 1958 until ’72. But nothing worked till he found a niche with heavy rock. In 1958 Pantas had become involved with the band known as Ronnie & The Red Caps. They’d started the previous year as The Vegas Kings, before briefly becoming Ronnie & The Rumblers, with Dio on vocals and bass. In June 1958 I was sent to hospital with an overactive thyroid, Pantas explains. My brother Nick was 16 at the time, a year younger than me, and the guitarist in this band. He asked me to manage them.

Early years, education and musical training. Ronald James Padavona was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Italian-American parents who had moved to Portsmouth from Cortland, New York, where they had grown up, as part of Dio's father's service in the . Army during World War II. The family resided in Portsmouth for only a short time before returning to Cortland. Dio's musical career began in 1957 when several Cortland, New York musicians formed the band, The Vegas Kings. The group's lineup consisted of Dio on bass guitar, Billy DeWolfe on lead vocals, Nick Pantas on guitar, Tom Rogers on drums, and Jack Musci on saxophone.

The Dio Years proves that during his brief time with the band, Dio did help Sabbath make music that could hold its own with some of the classic lineup's finest moments. With Dio as a frontman, the band was harder, nastier, and a little faster than the slow sludge of the early Sabbath records, but it fit in nicely with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal at the beginning of the '80s and it's aged very well

For the record, Mr. Dio was not yet known as Dio at this time. As the front man of the Red Caps, he was still Ronald James Padavona. This single was, to the best of my knowledge, recorded in 1959 and released in 1960. Dio would've been 17 or 18 years old at the time. Kinda humbling to realize he's still out there tearing it up with Heaven & Hell and pushing 70.
