The Laughing Gnome" is a song by English singer David Bowie, released as a single on 14 April 1967. A pastiche of songs by one of Bowie's early influences, Anthony Newley, it was originally released as a novelty single on Deram Records in 1967. The track consists of Bowie meeting and conversing with a gnome, whose sped-up voice (created by Bowie and studio engineer Gus Dudgeon) delivers several puns on the word "gnome".
Album: Starting Point (1967). Charted: 6. Get the Sheet Music License This Song. To the amusement of the music press the re-issued song made in the UK singles chart. In 1990, Bowie announced the set list for his Sound+Vision Tour would be decided by telephone voting. The music magazine, NME, attempted to rig the voting so Bowie would have to perform "The Laughing Gnome," but the voting system was later scrapped
The Laughing Gnome was David Bowie’s second single to be released under Deram Records. On initial release, the single was unsuccessful, failing to reach charts, leaving Bowie unsatisfied. Neither of these two songs appeared on Bowie’s debut album. However, after the success of albums like Ziggy Stardust, and Bowie’s older works were being re-released, The Laughing Gnome became suddenly popular, reaching No. 6 on the British charts. From then on, The Laughing Gnome became a joke among fans, saying it’s some of Bowie’s worst material

David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that later made him famous, such as the folk rock of "Space Oddity" or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
