This album was originally released on the Folk Tradition label in 1983, shortly before Rogers' tragic death in an airplane crash; it was reissued on CD by the small but very cool Gadfly label in 1996. Rogers had a deep, rich singing voice and an amazing melodic talent; his original songs are of legendary quality. But this album consists of songs by other writers and a few traditional numbers from his native Canada, many of them remembered from his childhood.

Stan Rogers' music is a wonderful find for anyone who enjoys traditional folk. His music is lovely to listen to, acoustic & thoughtful and lots of sea ballads. You can't go wrong with any of his albums. On this album I especially enjoy Cape St. Mary's, Three Fishers, and Cliffs of Baccalieu. His voice is deep and resonant and any of his albums make a lovely listen. Stan was a treasure among Canadian folk singers and the world is the less for his absence since his untimely death.

The Family is a 1985 album released on Prince's Paisley Park Records label by the band of the same name. The album consists of eight Minneapolis sound tracks but with a funk-jazz slant. Two of the tracks are instrumentals, and three are ballads; many feature string arrangements by Clare Fischer, marking the beginning of Prince's longstanding association with the Michigan-born composer-arranger

Stanley Allison Rogers (November 29, 1949 – June 2, 1983) was a Canadian folk musician and songwriter. Rogers was noted for his rich, baritone voice and his songs which were frequently inspired by Canadian history and the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces and, later, the farms of the Canadian prairies and Great Lakes.

When Stan Rogers died in 1983, a piece of Canada died with him, and the folk community was stunned. An excellent mix can be found on the CD For the Family, a self-produced album released just before Rogers’ death. It contains songs written by family members and others. Though only 45 minutes, it features some of his best, from The Mary Ellen Carter and Northwest Passage to Barrett’s Privateers, with stirring footage.
