Paich shows why he was arranger of choice for with-it vocalists. And nobody was more with-it than Tormé, whose musicianship was as immaculate as his tuxedo. Plus, we get Tormé's hilarious hipsterism. This 1960 session is a showcase for Mel Tormé's interpretations of popular Broadway tunes of the day, accompanied by Marty Paich and his orchestra, featuring Art Pepper on alto saxophone. Mel Tormé Swings Shubert Alley has been included on The Penguin Guide to Jazz Core Collection list of essential jazz recordings.
In November 1959, a one-hour musical entitled Music from Shubert Alley was recorded in the alley, and broadcast on TV. In 1960, singer Mel Tormé came out with an album of show tunes entitled Mel Tormé Swings Shubert Alley, which was arranged by Marty Paich. Modern day (2000–present). On March 22, 2006, to mark the first anniversary of the official Broadway opening of the musical comedy Spamalot, the "World's Largest Coconut Orchestra", 1,789 people clapping together half coconut shells, performed in Shubert Alley.
Swings Shubert Alley. Of course it starts out with a bang with the punchy "Too Close for Comfort. Tormé sounds like he's racing the band to the finish of the song on this one (and a few others, like "Too Darn Hot" and "Surrey with the Fringe on Top"), on the latter he repeats the title over and over again with that exuberant voice. As with his other classic swing albums, Tormé does insert a few slower songs; here, "Once in Love with Amy," "A Sleepin' Bee" and "Old Devil Moon" are downtempo, with a smile.
