Formed on Long Island in 2000, Brand New is a rock band formed by Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney and Brian Lane, from the ashes of their previous band-The Rookie Lot. Brandon Reilly, also from The Rookie Lot, was recruited early on to play guitar in the newly formed Brand New, but moved on shortly after to join The Movielife. He was replaced by Vincent Accardi, who is still with the band today

What Brand New does better than anything on Science Fiction is create mood. It's in the weird interludes, the harrowing effects draped on the guitars and Lacey's voice. The singer goes through spine-tingling, high-pitched vocal call-backs on "Desert" and dire, Gregorian chant-like undulations on "Could Never Be Heaven. If they really are going to stay 18 forever, Science Fiction is a jarring commencement.
