The trio take their name from an upstate New York mental hospital, and have made an album that sounds superficially like a set of old-time American folk songs, built on Marcus's intimately understated vocal. But these 15 tunes are quietly skewed by Marcus and Moody's economical, affecting lyrics and Grubbs's great minimalist arrangements, allowing you to look through the surface of these songs to the shapes moving beneath.
Wingdale Community Singers record-release show on April 19 at Barbès. Night, Sleep, Death is the third full-length album from songwriting juggernaut The Wingdale Community Singers. It finds the core trio of Hannah Marcus, Rick Moody, and David Grubbs augmented by guests including Jolie Holland, Tanya Donelly, and Oneida’s Kid Millions.
The Wingdale Community Singers are David Grubbs (who played in Gastr del Sol, The Red Krayola, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait and has appeared on records by Will Oldham, Matmos, Tony Conrad, The Dirty Three, and Royal Trux), Hannah Marcus (who's most recent record Desert Farmers was recorded with members of the band Godspeed You Black Emperor!), and Rick Moody (bestselling author of. the novels Purple America and The Ice Storm). Together these three Brooklynites grow an organic album that speaks mostly about urban things - rats feature in a number of the compositions, for some reason, as does.
The album is strong throughout, but Wingdale Community Singers is particularly affecting at its most stripped down. On songs like "Pawn Shop Fire" and "Bitter Angels," the group gathers around an acoustic guitar or piano, singing their hearts out in sweet harmony. Chances are, you'll soon be singing along.
