Ode for St. Cecilia's Day (HWV 76) is a cantata composed by George Frideric Handel in 1739. The title of the cantata refers to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. The premiere was on 22 November 1739 at the Theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. Handel sets a poem which the English poet John Dryden wrote in 1687. The main theme of the text is the Pythagorean theory of harmonia mundi, that music was a central force in the Earth's creation.
Purcell's Te Deum and Jubilate was written for Saint Cecilia's Day, 1693, the first English Te Deum ever composed with orchestral accompaniment. This work was annually performed at St Paul's Cathedral until 1712, after which it was performed alternately with Handel's Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate until 1743, when both works were replaced by Handel's Dettingen Te Deum. He composed an anthem and two elegies for Queen Mary II's funeral Golden Age. Purcell H Choir The noise of foreign wars Robert Glenton Choir& orch Golden Age. The Golden Age does not mean the Hellenic period here; rather, this choral and orchestral group's name refers to the Baroque era. And with their stately grace, traditional instruments, and prominent use of the male falsetto, they do successfully transport the listener to the seventeenth century.
Written for St. Cecilia's Day, November 22, 1694, and scored for soloist, mixed choir, and an orchestra of trumpets, drums, strings, and continuo, it is one of Purcell's grandest and most ornate works. Setting the Ambrosian hymn in English, Purcell conceived his Te Deum and Jubilate Deo as a sort of English celebratory cantata with arias, duets, and trios alternating with choruses and highly embellished instrumental passages
