The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is the fifth release of The Rolling Stones music by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who gained control of the band's Decca/London material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein.
There will also be a 3 LP vinyl version, featuring extra tracks not previously broadcast. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was shot over two days in December 1968 and featured guests such as The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull and the impromptu supergroup The Dirty Mac (which featured John Lennon, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell, Eric Clapton and, on bag, Yoko Ono) in addition to the original lineup of The Rolling Stones
Rolling Stones Album Guide: The Good, The Bad, and The ‘Angie’. The Rolling Stones were the first group to move in a tactical way from clubs into arenas. The Beatles may have played Shea Stadium in 1965, but they did so with rinky-dink equipment, with speakers so small they had no hope of reaching the cheap seats. In that setting, the Beatles were a story told in mime – Marcel Marceau’s version of A Hard Day’s Night. The other band members have rented houses around town, sprawling estates with barbecues and swimming pools where they will soon be joined by their families. But Watts, who at 53 is the band’s oldest member (an honor previously held by 57-year-old Bill Wyman), prefers the quiet anonymity of a hotel.
Intense Menacing Rowdy Confident Rollicking Cynical/Sarcastic Druggy Freewheeling Raucous Rebellious Reckless Visceral Boisterous. Late Night Guys Night Out Drinking Drugs TGIF Good Times Open Road. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. And the Stones have some competition from the Who, Taj Mahal, and John Lennon on the same release. Filmed and recorded on December 10-11, 1968, at a North London studio, Rock and Roll Circus has been, as much as the Beach Boys' Smile, "the one that got away" for most '60s music enthusiasts. The Jethro Tull sequence is the standard studio track, but the rest - except for the Stones' "Salt of the Earth" - is really live.
Every album the group released through the early Seventies – from The Rolling Stones in 1964 to Exile on Main Street in 1972 - is essential not simply to an understanding of the music of that era, but to an understanding of the era itself. In their intense interest in blues and R&B, the Stones connected a young American audience to music that was unknown to the vast majority of white Americans. With the release of Steel Wheels in 1989, the Stones went back on the road again for the first time in seven years and inaugurated the latest phase of the band’s illustrious career. They’ve made strong, credible new albums during this period – Voodoo Lounge (1994), Bridges to Babylon (1997) – along with the excellent live album Stripped (1995) and the fun, satisfying hits collection, Forty Licks (2002). More significantly, though, the Stones have set a standard for live performance during this time.
Filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg's concert film features the Rolling Stones, the Who, Jethro Tull, John Lennon and Eric Clapton. Everything on here is pretty damn good - even the middling performance by the Rolling Stones. Back in the day some of these bands were infected with grandiose ideas that were rarely executed in a manner that met expectations. I am afraid that this is no different. But I am glad that they did these shows and movies now.
