Sister is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth. It was released in June 1987 by SST Records. The album furthered the band's move away from the no wave genre towards more traditional song structures, while maintaining an aggressively experimental approach. Like Sonic Youth's previous records, Sister was not successful at the time. It later garnered critical praise, with several publications naming it one of the 1980s' best albums.

Already, Sonic Youth were wide-ranging miners of culture. When Sister came out, the cover collaged a Richard Avedon photograph and a snapshot from Disney’s Magic Kingdom (both were later obscured or removed). But the band best articulated their artistic identity in their obsessive reworking of sound. Since their debut EP they had been altering their guitar tunings and instrumentation, a practice of rewriting Ranaldo and Moore picked up in their days playing with Glenn Branca.

The blunt, chaotic sound of Sonic Youth's visionary but difficult early work had begun to give way to a more coherent and song-oriented attack on 1986's EVOL, and with 1987's Sister, Sonic Youth revealed that they were a great rock band as well as a great art band. From the shifting dynamics and disquieting mood of the opening track "Schizophrenia" to the ferocious coda of "White Cross," Sister was the work of a band that had grown impressively stronger and more unified in the 12 months since their previous long-player.

Better than Daydream Nation? Maybe. An undoubted classic in noise pop that's essential to fans of alternative rock. Sister is the lesser known of Sonic Youth's two great late 80's albums, though it's arguably the better. Sister, like most Sonic Youth albums, opens subdued, with the haunting lull of "Schizophrenia".

Sonic Youth Format: Audio Cassette. Album is great if you are into instrumental music music. very calm the whole 60's feel to the music which is great. This album has gotten a great reissue treatment, with the five songs of the original EP, eight extra songs (live demos, basically), and several long essays in a booklet full of pictures. Starting off with that weird drum beat (with their pre-Steve Shelley drummer Richard Edson, making this the only album they do with this sound), the shivering guitars, and the galloping/limping rhythms, this is Sonic Youth as it was first ever hears on the SST original release. Yes, the drums are a bit jazzy, but it's all there in all its sqruonking glory.
