Coloratura soprano extraordinaire Lily Pons was one of the most popular - and at one time, among the most highly paid - classical music artists in history. A mainstay of the Metropolitan Opera, Pons also made extensive personal appearances, at her peak, with her then-husband, conductor André Kostelanetz, in addition to many records for both RCA Victor (through 1940) and Columbia (after 1940). Generally, Coloratura Assoluta is to be preferred over Recital - Lily Pons, but if one should happen to encounter this disc with no foreknowledge of Pons and her artistry, its contents are revelatory. Bird-Girl she may have been, but the purity of her ultra-high soprano has been seldom if ever matched since.
