The career of Frederick Shorty Long has not been well served in the CD age. Apart from an Essential Collection on the Spectrum label in 2000 (conspicuous for its omission of what many of his fans regard as their favourite track, ‘Chantilly Lace’) his work has appeared only on a number of various artist compilations. Now Ace are pleased to present his two albums on a single disc, which together with a pair of out-takes constitute all the material that was mixed to stereo during his tenure at Motown. Shorty was to have one more single released, before he died in a tragic boating accident on 29 June 1969.

Yet Shorty was Long on talent. That single arrived in 1964, but Gordy didn’t release a Long solo album until 1968, just one year before the artist died at the age of 29 in a boating accident. Don’t Mess with My Weekend continues the party-time groove, as does Night Fo’ Last, on which the H-D-H team tried to recapture the Function magic.

Frederick 'Shorty' Long has always had a special place in the affections of all serious Motown collectors, although he recorded less than three dozen tracks in total in his five years with the company. His singles on Motown's Soul label are cherished artifacts of the company's Golden Era and have been for decades now. Unfortunately Shorty died in a boating accident in 1969, just as he was beginning to move into the commercial mainstream. and shortly before his second album was due to be released  . 4. 6. For a Motown artist who had a Top Ten pop hit, Shorty Long has been surprisingly unrepresented by single-artist compilations. This 26-track CD does much to rectify the situation, combining both of the albums he did for the label (1968's Here Comes the Judge and 1969's The Prime of Shorty Long, both originally on Motown's soul subsidiary) onto one disc, along with a previously unissued stereo mix of "Mobile Lil the Dancing Witch" and a previously unissued stereo alternate. version of "Chantilly Lace.
