James Peter Giuffre (/ˈdʒuːfri/, Italian pronunciation: ; April 26, 1921 – April 24, 2008) was an American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He is notable for his development of forms of jazz which allowed for free interplay between the musicians, anticipating forms of free improvisation.
Born in Brawley, California, Rumsey first began playing the piano, followed by the drums and finally the bass. After jobs with Vido Musso and Johnnie Davis, Rumsey became part of Stan Kenton's first band. Rumsey soon left Kenton after an argument. He played with Charlie Barnet and Barney Bigard before taking a short hiatus from music.
Frank Rosolino, trombone; Bob Cooper, tenor sax; Victor Feldman, piano, vibes, congas; Howard Rumsey, bass; Stan Levey, drums; Bobby Troup, host. Somebody Loves Me. Sunday Mood. June Christy, vocals; and others, Bobby Troup, host.
The CD recreates one of those LPs which are really a discographical Frankenstein's monster, an earlier 10-inch with some later tracks tacked onto the A and B sides to make it a 12-incher.
Essential Jazz Masters.
Howard Rumsey's group is heard on their second earliest session (their first was made for the tiny Skylark label), which was also their debut for Contemporary. The band at the time consisted of trumpeter Shorty Rogers, trombonist Milt Bernhart, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenors, pianist Frank Patchen, bassist/leader Rumsey, and drummer Shelly Manne.
