The Leçons de ténèbres pour le mercredi saint ("Tenebrae Readings for Holy Wednesday") are a series of three vocal pieces composed by François Couperin for the liturgies of Holy Week, 1714, at the Abbaye royale de Longchamp. Couperin's Leçons de ténèbres use the Latin text of the Old Testament Book of Lamentations, in which Jeremiah deplores the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. In the Catholic tradition, they symbolize the loneliness of Christ, betrayed by Judas and abandoned by his apostles.
Leçons de ténèbres, literally translated lessons of darkness, is a genre of French baroque music which developed from the polyphonic lamentations settings for the tenebrae service of Renaissance composers such as Sermisy, Gesualdo, Tallis, and Tomás Luis de Victoria into virtuoso solo chamber music. However the context of the French Leçons de ténèbres was often private performance. Delalande's 15-year-old daughter sang for Louis XIV first in his living rooms and then in chapel, becoming the praise of all Paris . François Couperin 1714, 3 settings for Wednesday survive, the other 6 settings for Thursday and Friday are lost. Marc-Antoine Charpentier – many complete settings.

François Couperin’s Trois Leçons de Ténèbres for voice and continuo are in the Holy Week tradition of settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah. but only three survive (two solos and one duet), and the vocal writing is full of piercing, anguished clashes against the calm simplicity of the accompaniment. The sacred works on this album will seem unfamiliar indeed to those who know François Couperin through his ornate, allusive keyboard music. The mood is intimate and deeply serious, and the music is written in a French sacred style with its roots in the 17th century, with semi-declamatory solo lines over a small continuo group here realized by theorbo, bass viol, and a gorgeous small organ. Most striking are the Trois Leçons de Ténèbres, part of a set of Lamentations for Easter week whose other components have been lost (or never existed).
