The Rolling Stones, formed in 1962, have been together for five decades, making them the longest-performing rock band of all time. In 1993, Bill Wyman announced his retirement. The Stones’ Voodoo Lounge album won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 1995 and prompted a world tour. Jagger and Richards agreed that their drifting in the 80s attributed to their success in the 90s. They believe that had they stayed together, they would have broken up.

Aftermath was The Rolling Stones’ fourth album in the UK, where it reached N. after being released by Decca Records on 15 April 1966. In the US, however, it was released two months later, on 20 July, by London Records. After entering the Billboard chart on 9 July, at N. 17 (the highest new entry of the week – four places ahead of The Beatles’ Yesterday And Today) the album would spend six weeks climbing the charts on the way to its US peak of N., on 13 August, nestling just one place behind The Beatles.

The Rolling Stones have done more to define the look, attitude and sound of rock & roll than any other band in the genre's history. After that, the Stones were an indomitable force on the music scene, and they have continued to be to this day. In 1978, the band’s album, Some Girls, rose to the challenge of punk ( When the Whip Comes Down ) – whose energy and attitude the Stones had defined a decade earlier – but also swung with the sinuous grooves of disco ( Miss You ). The album is one of the best of that decade. Meanwhile, guitarist Ron Wood had replaced Mick Taylor in 1975, adding another key element to the version of the Rolling Stones that would last another three decades – and counting

The album is considered an artistic breakthrough for the band, as it is the first Stones album to consist entirely of Mick Jagger/Keith Richards compositions. Aftermath is one of the final albums to benefit from the unique instrumental forays provided by Brian Jones. He played a variety of instruments not usually associated with their music, including sitar, Appalachian dulcimer, marimbas, and Japanese koto, as well as guitar, harmonica and keyboards, though much of the music is still rooted in Chicago electric blues. It was the first Rolling Stones album to be recorded entirely in the US,.
