You're a Grand Old Flag" is an American patriotic march. The song, a spirited march written by George M. Cohan, is a tribute to the American flag. In addition to obvious references to the flag, it incorporates snippets of other popular songs, including one of his own. Cohan wrote it in 1906 for his stage musical George Washington, Jr. The chorus is also used (with the words changed) as the team song for the Melbourne Football Club.

It doesn't mention South Melbourne in it so the Swans kept what we recorded in 1972. I'm a bit disappointed to think my voice might not be ringing out over the speakers at the MCG in future if they did drop them all together. Caddy said The Fable Singers – which included renowned Channel Seven film critic and musical director Ivan Hutchinson – recorded the 12 theme songs plus B-side The Football Song in one day in Melbourne. Ivan Hutchinson, movie critic and Channel Seven musical director, sang on the original recordings.
