Toyan may not have always hit the heights of Wales or Chaplin, but he did light up many a sound-system dance and made a decent to excellent showing on vinyl. After essential titles How the West Was Won and Spar With Me, Toyan qualifies as a non-crucial but still solid mix of mic musings. And considering the presence of the Roots Radics band and Channel One's Ernest Hookim and Scientist at the mixing board, the going couldn't be less than heavy.

Toyan aka Ranking Toyan (born Byron Letts, died 1991) was a Jamaican reggae deejay active since the mid-1970s and best known for his early 1980s recordings. Toyan began his career in 1974, deejaying on Kingston's sound systems, such as Socialist Roots and Romantic HiFi. He recorded his debut single, "Disco Pants" in the late 1970s for producer Don Mais

Toyan - or Ranking Toyan as he is also called - emerged in the mid-seventies when he started to appear on the sound system scene of Kingston JA, soon becoming a highly rated live performer with local sounds like Social Roots and Romantic Hi-Fi. He was heavily influenced by the deejays Big Youth and Dillinger, whose approach he adapted when he started his recording career with producer Don Mais of Roots Tradition in the latter half of the seventies.
