There are two phases of The Dream Syndicate. There was the band with revolving lineups that existed from 1982 to 1988 and made four albums including The Days of Wine and Roses and have influenced bands and delighted fans in the years since. And then theres the band that reunited in 2012 and is closing in on its seventh year with nary a lineup change. This 21st Century version of the Dream Syndicate released How Did I Find Myself Here in 2017 to universal acclaim, no small feat for a band reuniting after almost three decades. Their new album These Times feels like a late-night radio show that you might have heard as a kid, drifting off into dreams and wondering the next morning if any of it was real. So, what does it sound like?

Dream Syndicate have a long and sorted history, but they’re right here right now, and that’s good enough for me. As to the vinyl, my 180 gram copy sounded warm and smooth, tracked well with no surface noise. One note of caution, the black background on the front and back will fingerprint to death, get it in a plastic sleeve and reframe from touching. The Dream Syndicate – ‘These Times’ (Anti-, 2019). Ross Beattie presents It’s Psychedelic Baby podcast (July).

If Wynn was hoping to establish a distinct sonic identity for the Dream Syndicate in the 21st century, he's certainly stuck to his guns, as 2019's These Times is very much of a piece with How Did I Find Myself Here?, and a very different beast than the band with Karl Precoda or Paul B. Cutler on lead guitar. Then again, if smart songwriting and a lot of guitar have always been at the root of this group's formula, These Times more than qualifies, and it's a tighter and more exciting set than How Did I Find Myself Here?

And on These Times, the Paisley Underground godfathers explore our current state of dread and melancholy, but without ever getting mired in bleakness. There’s a sense of, well, we’re here now, might as well look around and see what we can salvage that pervades the album. The album balances the avant-garde with the listenable; Still Here Now might be a little easier on the ears than the hollow-shout psychedelic sway of the electro-blues Space Age, but they are at their best when they’re peeking around the corner of darkness and light

The Dream Syndicate is an American alternative rock band associated with neo-psychedelia and the Paisley Underground. The latest single and video from our album These Times is quite simply a tale of hope and optimism-the journey through darkness that leads to a blinding, luminous light at the end of the tunnel. Or, more sonically, it’s what might have happened if George Harrison had collaborated with Big Star instead of Badfinger while making All Things Must Pass.
