Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise were a famous British comedy double act, who worked together for over forty years until Eric Morecambe's death from a heart attack in 1984. Beginning in variety, a form of popular British theatre similar to American vaudeville, they progressed to radio and then to television and, less successfully, to films.

Eric Morecambe (John Eric Bartholomew, 14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984) and Ernie Wise (Ernest Wiseman, 27 November 1925 – 21 March 1999), known as Morecambe and Wise (and sometimes as Eric and Ernie), were an iconic English comic double act, working in variety, radio, film and most successfully in television. Their partnership lasted from 1941 until Morecambe's death in 1984.
With Eric Morecambe, Ernie Wise, Ann Hamilton, Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen. The Morecambe & Wise Show was a long running and massively popular sketch series starring British comedy duo Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, plus a string of top-name international celebrity guests (of a bygone age), like André Prévin.
The Beatles appeared on the Morecambe and Wise show on December 1963. At the ATV Studios in Borehamwood, they performed This Boy and I Want To Hold Your Hand, before teaming up with the hosts for a version of Moonlight Bay. The song was originally sung by Alice Faye in the 1940 film Tin Pan Alley. It made an appearance in 1951, when Doris Day sang it in On Moonlight Bay. By 1963 it was a well-known classic, and a suitable finale for the Morecambe and Wise show - "something suitable for Eric's age," in the words of Ernie Wise
