Lou Reed is the debut solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed, released in April 1972 by RCA Records, two years after he left the Velvet Underground.

Lou Reed is the debut solo album by musician Lou Reed, released in 1972 by RCA Records two years after he left The Velvet Underground. The album comprises eight new recordings of then-unreleased Velvet Underground songs, plus two new songs, "Going Down" and "Berlin" (the latter was re-recorded by Reed as the title track for his 1973 album Berlin). Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, from a combination of African-American genres such as blues, boogie woogie, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music, together with Western swing and country music. Though elements of rock and roll can be heard in blues records from the 1920s and in country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until the 1950s.

Reed’s presence was everywhere. Several times during the Rock & Roll set I thought I heard Dean Wareham’s guitar, which made me laugh, because Wareham’s guitar is Velvet Underground guitar. The readings featured everybody from Kim Cattrall to Steve Buscemi, but I wanted to soak up some drone action, so I headed to Alice Tully Hall. As I walked away, I heard Fisher Stevens reading Kill Your Sons, from Sally Can’t Dance : two-bit psychiatrists, electric shock. Sister she got married on Long Island and her husband takes the train.

A page-by-page guide to understanding one of rock’s most inscrutable icons. As such, it’s much more than just a take on the album itself-it’s a recontextualization of Reed, and an illuminating look at the conflicts that motivated him, from the perspective of a fan and fellow musician. Lou Reed: The Last Interview and Other Conversations (2015). But at its most interesting and tragic, this book serves to inject the well-worn myths of Lou Reed the legend-from his speed-fueled creation of Berlin to his drunken 1973 performance at Alice Tully Hall-with humanity, and offers an insider’s perspective to Reed’s losses of personal control and his fears and anxieties, particularly during the Transformer era.

Then, Lou Reed hired him and Bush's bassist, Prakash John, to play at a concert at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York in late 1973. Highlights from that show were released as Rock 'n' Roll Animal. After it became a hit, a second record from that night, Lou Reed Live, came out in 1975. In between, he played on much of Reed's Sally Can't Dance

First with the Velvet Underground, and then as a solo artist, he made music ranging from the wildly experimental to the perfectly straightforward. But Reed was a storyteller above all, waxing poetic about the full, frightening spectrum of human emotions years before others would dare. With their trans heroines, drug narratives, love stories, elegies, guitar jams and drone-scapes, he made LPs that could be flawed. Sensitive punks would make this album their bible. Transformer (1972) Reed came out fully as a solo star on this left-hook pop masterpiece, with help from Velvets-superfan producer David Bowie, fresh off his own game-changing Ziggy Stardust album; Bowie was returning the favor of glam rock to its American architect. Some songs ( Andy’s Chest ) were VU reclamations.
