The Gates of Slumber was a doom metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. The group is better known in Germany and England than in their native United States. Their first release distributed within the . was 2008's Conqueror, released on Profound Lore Records. The band was formed by Karl Simon in 1998, but didn't have an official lineup until 2001, when bassist Dr. Phibes and drummer Jamie Walters joined the band.

The Gates of Slumber are a doom metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. They were active from 1998 - 2013 with five studio albums. Their sound is in the vein of classic traditional doom metal with lyrical themes of mythology and fantasy. The band's name was taken from the song "Gates of Slumber" by Cianide

The greatest misconception about the Gates of Slumber is that the Indiana trio is your typical, run-of-the-mill doom band, but anyone who's actually spent time with the group's discography would beg to differ. As of its very first album, the trio has in fact been experimenting with different metallic varieties, ranging from traditional ‘70s vintages to energized ‘80s flavors to a few psychedelic, semi-thrash, and even downright foreign musical elements to, sure, good old-fashioned doom as well

The Gates of Slumber have come through yet again. The band seems to keep getting better. The Wretch" is their best album that I have yet heard, which is saying quite a bit because each of their last two have been Top 10 of the Year-worthy albums. This one looks to be in that range again this year. The thing that I think makes The Gates of Slumber such a great band is that their music never sounds forced. They are not playing this type of traditional, old school-sounding metal because it is popular or profitable. The Gates of Slumber has once more impressed me. This is easily Top 10-worthy for the year and possibly their best album yet. Not Consciously Retro, Just Great Doom - 90%.
